Marek Reichman was born in Sheffield, England in 1966, he received his BA in industrial design in 1989 at Teesside Polytechnic, based in Middlesbrough, England. He is also said to have attended Teesdale University in Newcastle where he graduated with a first class honors degree in industrial design and specifically vehicle design. He also studied vehicle design at the royal College of Art in London. After graduation, he began working for the Rover Group in Coventry England. In this position, he helped design and develop Rover’s flagship vehicles. In 1995, he joined BMW Designworks USA in California. He worked there as a Senior Designer and when BMW acquired Rover Group, he led the overhaul of the Land Rover design for future models, the most significant being the completely redesigned 2003 Land Rover. In 1998, he moved back to London to establish a London based design studio that was capable of producing full sized models.

In 1999, he moved to Ford and worked as a chief designer. The position he held was Director of Design for Product, Interior Design Strategy and Process. In that position, he led various advanced and production design programs. His position also put him to work under their Lincoln and Mercury divisions. Because he worked under these sub divisions, he had his first contact with Aston Martin. Ford Motor Company group vice president of Design and Chief Creative officer J. Mays was not happy to see him go as Marek has proven himself in a variety of design jobs throughout the company in the six years he spent with them. He was however, pleased to see a new chapter open up in Marek’s career life, allowing him to utilize his unique perspectives on British design.

In 2006, Marek Reichman oversaw the production of the Rapide Concept. This is a fully functional design study of the first true four door sedan presented by Aston Martin. This car was designed to be an elegant four door sports car that stayed true to all of Aston Martin’s ideals regarding their vehicles. Sporting four doors wasn’t it’s only unique point. It is equipped with four full sized seats and an exceptional luggage compartment that is accessed through a full sized tailgate. This car was designed to open up it’s own unique marketing sector as an elegant, four door sports car designed to carry the whole family with all of their belongings.

This article was written by Tom Sangers on behalf of Romans International who are an Aston Martin Dealership and also great Porsche Dealers in the UK.

It is no secret that Volkswagen has been through a lot of controversies lately that have shocked the whole automotive industry. But despite such, Europe’s largest automaker and producer of the popular Volkswagen relay has come out unscathed and still in its full grandeur ready to face more challenges that come its way. For the almost 62 years that Volkswagen has spent in the automotive industry it has its shares of ups and downs but the fact that it is still Europe’s largest automaker simply shows that its achievements has overshadowed its failures.

And just recently, Volkswagen was awarded with the Silver 2007 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany for its corporate book called “Volkswagen Corporate Design Essentials.” This “brand bible” gives a clear documentation of brand tonality and visual presentation of the design principles of the Volkswagen brand. The awarding was held at a public ceremony at Frankfurt am Main during the Ambiente International trade fair.

The German Design Council has invited an international jury to pick the Design Award Winners. There were 940 nominations but only 25 products were chosen to receive Germany’s only official design award. According to Jochen Sengpiehl, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen, “For Volkswagen, corporate identity and corporate design play an extremely important role. They contribute to the high awareness of the Volkswagen brand. We are proud to have won the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany.”

The Design Award was presented by the Federal Ministry of Economic and Trade. But the organizer of the awarding event was the German Design Council. The Ministries and Senators for Trade and Industry of the German Sates and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Trade nominate individual companies and their products for the Design Award. The contest also requires for nominated products to at least have a national or international prize at their sleeves.

The “Volkswagen Corporate Design Essentials” corporate book has already received a red dot communication award as well as a prize in the Best of Corporate Publishing competition. MetaDesign, a Berlin-based agency has created the design for the corporate book and for the Volkswagen brand corporate design system.

Complete details of the 2007 Design Award are published on the comprehensive catalog created by Birkhauser Verlag. An exhibition showcasing all the winners is going to be organized after the award ceremony. The exhibition will also tour on several locations in Germany and also in other countries.

Growing up with three brothers, Natalie Anderson became exposed early to the world of automobiles. This 29-year-old account manager now dreams of having her very own top-of-the-line vintage car and has great knowledged in Volkswagen relay.

Volvo cars are making a big splash in China’s car market. The Volvo Car Corporation of Sweden sent out some major designers like Steve Harper to Taiwan to enlist some of the country’s local car-designers. The Ford Group decided to recruit some Taiwanese car designers for the Great China Car Market.

The recruited car designers from Taiwan will be allowed to design new car models for its Sweden designer center. Volvo has made this plan specifically for the Great China Car Market. New car designs will be made by these Taiwanese designers for the distinctive and oriental taste of the targeted consumers.

500,000 to 700,000 Volvo cars are expected to be sold out internationally this year. This includes around 50,000 units for the Asian market which includes Taiwan, Japan, mainland China and other Southeast Asian nations. Since the demand for luxury cars are rapidly rising, car makers from the Volvo Car Corporation are aiming to sell 50,000 to 80,000 units of Volvo cars in Asia in 2007.

Apart from that, Volvo is continuously deploying its manufacturing, product design and parts procurements including its Volvo C70 auto parts in Asia. Also, as a component of Ford’s global part procurement system, they have the responsibility of lowering the production cost.

According to Volvo Car Taiwan officials, Volvo is number three among the country’s imported car brands. Still, Mercedes–Benz and BMW tops the chart. However, they are adding more efforts to meet the consumer’s taste in Great China. This is one of the reasons why Volvo is employing talented car designers from Taiwan to develop new car models for the specific market.

Steve Harper has been visiting Taiwan several times. According to the officials, Harper was extremely impressed with the designing performances of Taiwan’s local designers. These designers are from Ford Lio Ho of Motor Co.’s design center. Volvo have appropriated NT$10 million or US$305,810, to continuously hold a series of car designing seminars with the Taiwan Design Center. This is a proof that Asian talents are becoming more globally competitive in terms of car designing.

Soon, these designs will be made available in the market. Finally, Volvo car designs will be more preferable for Asians.

Kenneth McKinley is a 35-year old marketing specialist of voparts.com, a leading Volvo parts dealer in the country today. Working in the car parts industry for a long time now and being a car enthusiast himself gives him a wealth of knowledge on anything automotive.

The automobile industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, specific attention is paid to the design of an automobile and the art of designing automobiles has a lot of science involved to it. Designers need to even look at the ergonomics when they are designing the appearance of a car. The people working on the design of a car are called automotive engineers. Normally, these people hold degrees in industrial design or transportation design.

Developing the visual appearance and the overall aesthetics of the car is the major job criterion. It is further divided into exterior styling, interior styling and color and trim design. The design of the vehicle needs to be in harmony with all its functions and accessories. Exterior styling refers to the exterior shape, surfaces, proportions and the external design of the car. Virtual models are first created before the actual prototypes. The main purpose of interior styling is to provide maximum convenience and comfort to the passenger. The shape, proportion and surfaces are also important here. The instrumental panel, seats, doors, windows, dash board etc are fall under the broad category of interior styling. The color and trim design team is primarily responsible for researching, designing and developing all the colors and materials which will be used in the interior and exterior design of the vehicle. Often, these designs follow a particular theme or concept. With the advent of computers and technology, computer-aided design is used by graphic designers to design 3D models of cars.

Historically, automotive design was not as significant as it is today. In 1924, a turning point occurred when General Motors decided to make annual model changes and urged the customers to develop a need to replace their car each year. Alfred P. Sloan Jr., the head of General Motors, referred to the strategy as dynamic obsolescence whereas critics slammed it as being planned obsolescence. Ford did not adopt this strategy and hence by 1931 General Motors outsold Ford. After that period the design of the car has acquired utmost importance in the eyes of a customer and car manufacturers constantly update models, even if the underlying function and design of the car remain the same.

Along with the physics of the car and a need to be aerodynamically stable, car manufacturers also need to focus their attention on the psychology of the customer. When a powerful car is mentioned, the image of a sleek design with a low and wide base comes to the mind since many of the sports cars manufactured follow that general theme. However, we have internalized these notions and we tend to generalize along these lines. It is difficult for manufactures to go beyond these stereotypes and beyond the psychology of the mass audience to innovate greatly. Car manufactures are constantly looking for major innovation to cater to market differentiation. Concept cars are often produced as prototypes to judge the reaction of people. Many car manufacturers believe that a concept that lacks context is simply confusing so there is great interest in developing stories around concept cars to create popularity.

Adding a pinstriping design to your car or motorcycle will instantly make it stand out from the crowd. Each pinstriping design is unique, creating a personal touch to any vehicle. Since the designs are so intricate, no one design looks the same. You can create pinstriping designs using templates with grooves, tape stencils, or the most difficult method, freehand. Each design consists of two colors, the main body and the line. With either method, your vehicle will stand out and show your personalized style.

The first design method is also one of the most common the use of templates. These templates are a great way to begin pinstriping because it gives you a guide throughout the project. By choosing templates containing grooves, you are able to create a design consisting of different depths and textures. This method of pinstriping also allows a variety of colors to be utilized with more simplicity. Using the templates also allows the work to be much neater.

The second method of creating designs are tape stencils. Tape stencils for designs are available in a large variety of different applications. While applying tape stencils to create your design it is very important to use specific pinstriping brushes. These brushes will ensure the quality of your pinstripe. A benefit from the use of tape stencils is that it allows you to apply multiple colors without waiting for the other applied stripes to dry. This method of application is an excellent way to experiment with pinstriping.

Freehand designing is the most difficult and is an extremely intricate process in the application of pinstripe designs. This process, unlike the others, requires much more practice to master the art of pinstriping. Although this method remains very difficult, it holds no restrictions during the creation of your pinstripe design. In order to keep the pinstripe design organized and neat, masking tape is required to be laid down as an outline of the design.

It is important to remember paint can easily drip under the edge and so auto body masking tape should be used while creating your freehand pinstriping design. After using this method your pinstriping will express your individual artistic flavor more so than stencils.

Although it is ultimately up to the designer, two colors are usually used while creating pinstripes. The first color sets off the body of your vehicle. The second color commonly used is the color for the thin line that contrasts and may decide how many colors will be included in your pinstripe design.

Pinstriping paint holds fast to steel and painted surfaces, allowing the design to remain over a period of time. No matter what method of application used pinstriping designs add a distinctive look to your vehicle. Just remember the materials chosen should always suit your artistic level as you create your intricate pinstripe designs.

The auto industry has always been known to be a dynamic industry. Year in and year out, car makers look for ways to improve their production vehicles. They focus not only on the performance of their car but also in the looks of these automobiles.

That is why car designers have always played a key role in the auto industry. In connection with this, car makers are always on the lookout for promising students. Lately, the industry has found a new spot where talented car design students thrive: South Korea.

While the country has only a short time of car making history compared to Japanese and Western countries, students from the country are touted to be one of the best in the world. Koreans have been employed by car manufacturers like Nissan and Mercedes-Benz. Some attributes that these South Korean designers have that impressed chief designers from the aforementioned car makers are their technical skills, work ethic, and creativity.

Shiro Nakamura, the chief Creative Officer and Head of Design for Nissan, said that: “When I first saw the sketches that Korean students were drawing, I was utterly shocked. Their design is very emotional and powerful. I hate to say it, but they are miles ahead of Japanese students, both in terms of design sense and technique. There’s no comparison”. He further said that Nissan will probably hire more Korean designers this year than Japanese ones.

The most known school where South Korean designers come from is the Hongik University which is located in the country’s capital. The university is the country’s top fine arts school. The Seoul-based school only offered the transportation design course in 1990, last year the number of students accommodated is doubled to 120.

Aside from homegrown talents, South Korea also produced some of the best young designers in the world. On of them is Jae Chung. He did not study in South Korea but out in the West. He graduated from the Art Center in California. Today he is now working for Dodge and the interesting fact is that he penned the Dodge Demon sports coupe currently on display at the 77th Geneva International Auto Show.

Ralph Gilles, the Vice President of Design for Chrysler, has this to say about Chung: “He was born in Korea and went to school in Pasadena. And it’s just like anything -you get exposed to the school, you get exposed to Chrysler and Dodge and out comes this new aesthetic.”

Another Korean, and also an alumnus of the Art Center, Han Seung Lee landed a job at Honda. Lee, in turn, penned the Sports 4 Concept shown to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2005. This shows that Koreans have what it takes to take on the world of car designing as sure as a Mercedes H&K air filters are efficient when it comes to doing their job.

Another chief designer which expressed admiration toward Korean design students is Koichi Hayashi, Deputy General Manager of Design for Mazda. He said that: “There’s a real passion among Korean designers to advance and succeed that exceeds what you see in Japanese students.” Currently, he has four Korean designers working for him at their Hiroshima headquarters.

The emergence of South Korea as a source of talented car designers is a good news for Japanese car makers. Due to the similarities in language structure and working culture of Japan and South Korea, Korean designers have an edge over their Western counterparts when applying for a job in any Japanese car company. Furthermore, Koreans are more willing than Westerners to work for relatively low starting salaries offered by Japanese car companies.

According to Nakamura, “all the pieces are in place, right now, young Korean designers are most sought after by Japanese carmakers but they can make it in the West anytime.” But Korean students should not rest on their laurels since in the near future – other countries in the world will also be producing design students at par with them. Countries like China, Russia, and India have all invested in training their car design students to be competitive in the auto industry.

Mike Bartley, 49, is a professional automotive journalist domiciled in Irvine, CA. He travels from one state to another to cover the hottest auto shows, racing events and automotive revelations. His penned compositions cover press releases, reviews, and suggestions. Where the auto action is, that’s exactly where you can find Mike. You can visit Mercedes H&K air filters for more information.

Once you have made sure your audio files can be played on your car stereo system, you have a choice of ways to transfer the files over. There are several solutions available. Your mp3 player or iPod can be connected with a cable or wirelessly via FM signals or Bluetooth.

Connecting your iPod or mp3 player to your car audio system is relatively simple, if you have the correct equipment. Auxiliary input cables are readily available on the internet and in car audio stores and they are relatively cheap. However, these only work if your stereo system has a built in iPod jack, which looks similar to a headphone jack. There are more complex cables available for connection as well, if your stereo does not have a direct jack. In these cases, most leads to connect mp3 players into your car are brand specific, meaning you will have to know what you are looking for.

An alternative is to use an FM transmitter to wirelessly transmit the music from your iPod to the nearest FM radio: your car stereo. This, again, requires you to buy an FM transmitter suitable for your iPod or mp3 player. One flaw with this method is that sound quality can suffer, but if you have not got a specific iPod jack in your audio system, then this is one of the easier ways to listen to your music files in your car.

A similar idea, but with higher quality output, is a car stereo with Bluetooth, which is gaining popularity. Just like with your phone, a Bluetooth car stereo can connect with other electrical items in your car that also have Bluetooth. This can include mp3 players, making it possible to easily connect your audio system to your mp3 player with no fiddly pieces of equipment or extras. Of course, this does require both pieces of equipment to have Bluetooth, which is rare. On the other hand, Bluetooth stereo systems can be purchased easily, and there are brand specific adapters available, not to mention that it can help integrate other electrical items in your car, not just your mp3 player.

The most complete option, if you are willing to spend a little more money, is to get a stereo system with mp3 player built in. This will still need to have an adapter cable or USB port but, with an internal hard-drive, files can be stored directly in your car, meaning you only have to transfer files once instead of every time you want to play them. This is the more expensive option but, if you are serious about your music, this might well be the way to go. All the quality and, once the files are uploaded, there is very little fuss and no trailing cables getting in the way.

What is in a car? And what is especially in car design? Perhaps you hanker for the newest, latest, sleekest look or perhaps you simply think that futuristic looks are plain odd. Design can also be fuel efficient.

Car design teams such as the one in Mercedes-Benz often look for new designs for next-generation appeal. This time around, it is all about fuel efficiency- and new sci-fi looks. Mercedes-Benz took its inspiration from something a little odd this time around- the tropical box fish.

The car is rather small, and has the sci-fi feel to it. The four cylinder gas-saving machine will return an amazing 84 miles per gallon at the constant speed of 54 miles per hour. This could be revolutionary as far as gas efficiency goes in new cars- a milestone in the industry. It can achieve the speed of 62 miles per hour in around 8 seconds- not bad at all.

The code-named ‘Bionic’ won’t be coming to a dealership near you, but it will heavily influence the design of future cars to come. The concept car was mainly for show, and to demonstrate new complicated fuel cell designs that save you money at the gas station.

No on is for sure when we will see changes such as this, but coming from Mercedes-Benz, it isn’t going to be cheap. Even at four cylinders- this car itself would cost much more than the average car. Expect 5 years at the latest to enjoy the gas-saving technology.

Let’s see if other manufacturers will follow suit.

The Latest Brawn BGP001 – front-wing design has already taken a lead in the Formula One in Melbourne, Australia. I just saw the start of the Melbourne 2009 Formula One Grand Prix and the Brawn BGP001 – front-wing design is a revelation and an engineering design marvel.

With new design allowances made by Formula One, the Drivers sitting so far behind are finding it exceedingly difficult to judge and ascertain the width of these new Changes on front-wing and have a tendency to clip the tire of their compatriots. However, both the Brawn Racing drivers have answered the early criticism and proved that the Brawn BGP001 – front-wing design is a fantastic design.

The designers may have carried out their research and may look at adjusting is to either the width by an inches on both sides or making it curved so that the corners of the wing don’t stick out so much. So the corners must be curved and the entire Brawn BGP001 – front-wing a couple of inches narrower. But this is subject to debate and no winning team likes to change or alter anything very quickly.

Its important that these design changes are approved only after a 100% test in race conditions as it could be very dangerous for the drivers, not forgetting the huge financial expense that may incurred in changing the design, development and production of any further new innovations on the Brawn BGP001 – front-wing! Well done The Brawn Team for winning the Australian Grand Prix 2009!
